DKSP News # 2
For a small child there is no division between learning, and the things he or she does just for fun and thinks are educational. The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play. -- Penelope Leach, psychologist and author.
Dear Parents,
In classrooms at DK Schoolhouse, children are encouraged to learn through play and hands on activities. Our teachers engage centers such as counting, dramatic play, crafting and reading, in order to help children reinforce learning concepts. Our classrooms are equipped with a wide range of developmental toys which children use on a daily basis. We love to know that our little students are given an environment where they can flourish, explore and express creativity.
It's better to implement hands-on activities and conduct one on one instruction if there are small numbers of children in class. Why is that? Because the smaller the number is, the easier it is for teachers to connect with each child on a personal level.
We encourage our teachers to work in small groups throughout the day to reinforce concepts introduced to the class. It is wonderful to see children absorbing and understanding what they learned through out the day. Their smiling faces reflect the joy that they feel upon achieving their goals. It could be something as small as sharing with a friend, or letting a classmate take their spot at the front of the line. Maybe it's something HUGE, like finally being able to remember the sound of a letter they've been struggling with. Whatever it is, their achievement is a bench mark not only for them, but also for teachers.
Teaching in small groups is a successful way to help students work towards, and attain their individual goals. Our team of teachers make time for each child so that the possibility of meeting their goals becomes reality.
